Following the news item of 10 February, we would like to once again draw your attention to our blog post (Fire) safe living and working in the Netherlands.
Fire safety in the Netherlands leaves much to be desired
Recently, research by the TU in Eindhoven showed that hundreds, if not thousands, of buildings in the Netherlands may be fire-unsafe. In Eindhoven, the percentage of buildings that are at high risk in the event of fire is even around ten percent. Once again, the discussion about the fire safety of Dutch buildings is flaring up, now two years after the major fire in the London residential area of Kensington, in which 72 people lost their lives.
Highly flammable materials also found in Dutch buildings
The reason for this heated discussion in the Netherlands was the fact that the same materials were used in Dutch buildings as in buildings in London. These highly flammable materials, mainly used to insulate facades, turned out after research to have been the cause of the devastating fire in the Grenfell Tower in Kensington. While in England and even in Belgium and France the necessary measures are now being taken to optimize fire safety in buildings, the Netherlands does not seem to be in such a hurry. To the annoyance of many researchers.
Take fire safety seriously
Municipalities are responsible for mapping risk properties themselves, but are often reluctant to do so. The risk of a decrease in value for the owners of the properties and the imposition of force to take measures ensures that municipalities prefer to avoid confrontation.
However, researchers from the TU in Eindhoven speak of safety that is currently not being taken seriously and a slow pace of events.
