Make sure you stand out, even in the dark!

Increase safety through good visibility

At work, at events, sports matches or in case of calamities, good visibility is very important. You also need to be extra visible while running and in dark and unsafe situations. Good and quick recognition is important for your own safety, but also that of your environment. There are many situations imaginable in which wearing conspicuous clothing is important. In this blog we explain why safety vests are indispensable for good safety and why they are mandatory in certain situations and countries.

In case of emergency

In the event of calamities or an emergency situation, it is important to be able to act quickly to prevent worse. Clear instructions and recognisability help to bring people to safety, in dangerous situations and in unsafe places. Emergency response officers, security guards and other emergency workers must therefore be recognised quickly. They are often the first point of contact and provide first aid. Safety vests ensure that these people are quickly recognisable. Reflective vests are also a good tool in the event of smoke development or dark, dangerous situations.

During work

Good visibility is essential on the work floor. Safety vests help with safety where people work (together). Even in dark spaces or where there is little light, there is a great safety risk. A safety vest stands out, which reduces the risk of incidents.

Are you a point of contact for a large group of people? Then a vest with the right message is also important. This way, you are quickly recognized and can be acted upon quickly, also in case of calamities.

The use of safety vests can be found in various sectors and activities, such as:

  • During traffic checks
  • In construction
  • At the emergency services
  • In the warehouse
  • In dark places
  • During road or railway work
  • In the industry
  • Event industry

Sports and recreation

Safety vests are also often used at events, so that people can quickly recognize which employee they can contact for questions. Or on a sports field, so that people can immediately ask for help from a first aid worker in case of injuries and accidents. Time plays a crucial role in an emergency. Good visibility of the first aid worker is therefore an absolute must!

A safety vest is also very important for walkers and joggers. In the dark, your surroundings must be able to see you quickly. Prevent accidents and wear a vest with reflective stripes so that you are clearly visible to other road users.

On the road with a car or camper

It is advisable to also take safety items with you on the road. Have you had a breakdown with your car? Or an accident? Safety vests offer optimum recognition when you are on the side of the road. This way, other road users will quickly recognise you by a conspicuous yellow or orange vest. These vests also offer a solution in the dark due to the fluorescent and reflective surfaces.

In the Netherlands, the use of a safety vest is not mandatory and you do not need to have the vest in the car according to the Dutch government. Are you going on a trip abroad by car? In several countries, it is mandatory to have and use a vest. In some countries, the fluorescent vests must even be within reach, so they may not be in the trunk. Or vests must be available for all passengers.

There are various rules and guidelines for vests in the car for countries such as:

  • Belgium
  • France
  • Germany
  • Czech Republic
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Croatia
  • Luxembourg
  • Austria
  • Poland
  • Slovakia
  • Spain
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovenia

Prevent unpleasant situations and take the right materials with you on your trip, so that you meet the legal obligations and of course stand out (even in the dark) when you are on the side of the road with a breakdown. Get informed in advance about the current rules and laws per country!

Also for professional use

RWS safety vests meet the guidelines of Rijkswaterstaat and are easy to put on over work clothing. The RWS vests are mainly used in traffic to stand out in dangerous situations (in the dark). For example, when working on the track, on the road surface or during traffic controls.

Rijkswaterstaat uses the European standard EN-20471, which focuses on high visibility of clothing. Important for this standard is that a minimum amount of fluorescent material is used for the clothing and that the required reflective material is present. By using this extra reflective material in the “H-shape” visibility is increased, making it safer to work in the dark or in fog and smoke.

Quick recognition? Choose a striking print

Do you want to stand out even more? Safety vests are available in different colours and sizes and with different prints. For example, you can choose a striking colour orange or yellow, but also blue, red or green. The fluorescent vests are available in different sizes, namely: ML, XL-XXL, XXL, 3XL-4XL or One Size. So there is always a vest that fits you!
