Description
Vaseline is a greasy substance that becomes liquid at a temperature of approximately 40 to 60 degrees Celsius. It consists of hydrocarbons, which are largely aliphatic. In its unrefined form, it may contain carcinogenic substances, but in its purified form, these are removed. It is resistant to the action of almost all chemicals. Vaseline is used in medicine, industry, and cosmetics.
It has the property of not being absorbed by the skin; it remains on the skin and provides good coverage.
In medicine, it is therefore used to cover the skin in cases of eczema, burns, extremely dry skin, or in other cases where the skin cannot effectively perform its barrier function.
In cosmetics, it is used in preparations for protection against cold or moisture, as well as in products for dry skin. The INCI name is petrolatum. According to some sources, the use of vaseline on the skin can lead to a skin condition known as paraffin addiction.
Additionally, vaseline is used as a lubricant and to protect metal parts from corrosion.
