Why is eyewash so important in the workplace?

Prevent further damage to the eyes

Where work is done, accidents happen. That is a fact we cannot ignore. Good preparation is therefore an advantage that we should all be aware of. In this blog we would like to provide you with more information about solutions for purifying / cleaning the eyes. It is important to have a good eyewash at hand in case of calamities, so that any damage to the eye can be prevented.

When working in a company with wood, metal, dirt or dust, swirling particles can end up in the eye. When this happens, it is important to act quickly so that any damage to the eye can be limited. The damage that can occur to the eyes is caused by small particles that remain stuck in the eye. These small particles can be rinsed out of the eye with eyewash .

Types of eyewash

Almost all eyewash contains a sterile sodium chloride solution, which has a similar salt content to the fluid in the eye. Rinsing with this reduces the chance of infections. An eyewash is sterile to prevent bacteria or viruses from entering the eye. Eyewash bottles that contain sodium chloride as a content are used when the eyes have come into contact with dirt, dust particles or metal or wood chips.

The eyewash bottles with pH neutral content are used when the eyes have been in contact with chemical substances, such as acids and alkalis. Acids and alkalis affect the eye immediately, which makes it important to bring the pH value of the eye back to the correct level. This is done by using pH neutral eyewash.

What You Need to Know About Eyewash

  • An eyewash bottle should be quickly and easily accessible
  • Should be stored between 5°C – 25°C
  • If the eyewash bottle has been opened, it is no longer sterile
  • Always throw away an opened eyewash bottle, even if it is not yet empty. Reusing opened bottles carries a risk of infection
  • Please note the expiration date

Why not rinse your eyes with tap water?

When rinsing with tap water alone, bacteria and other germs can remain in the eye. This is because tap water is not sterile and so there is still a chance of infection of the eye. It is therefore always recommended to use eyewash.

Examples of eyewashes

There are various solutions and products. From a single eyewash bottle to complete stations with all the conveniences and solutions for eye showers when using chemicals. In fact, in places where chemicals are used, the law prescribes that you must have special eyewash stations with a neutralizing effect. Also an Afterwash agent for arranging the optimal eye environment.
